The city council owns and maintains in excess of 100 highway structures, a number of which are significant landmark structures such as Waterloo Bridge and the twin Golden Jubilee Footbridges over the River Thames. The highway structures for which the City Council is responsible for include road bridges and footbridges, pedestrian subways, retaining walls, road underpasses and 4.5 kilometers of Pipe Subway Network which distribute utilities such as water, gas, telecoms and electricity underneath certain streets in the City.
These structures are referred to collectively as 'highway structures' as they all support the public highway. It is essential that these structures are regularly inspected and maintained to ensure they are fit for purpose and the life of these valuable assets is prolonged as much as possible.
