London Cycle Hire Complementary Measures - Regent Street

London Cycle Hire Complementary Measures - Regent Street

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Great Marlborough Street, Regent Street

Project Type: Traffic, Safety & Parking

Project Overview

In November 2008, the Mayor of London announced that the London Cycle Hire Scheme would be on the streets of central London by May 2010. 6000 bicycles will be available for hire from 400 docking stations in Central London. As part of this scheme a series of complementary measures are being designed to supplement the London Cycle Hire Scheme.

The project’s objective is to provide an east-west cycle link route that avoids Oxford Street.

The improvements included:

  • Provision of a contra-flow cycle lane in Hanover Street
  • Right-turn facility for cycles exiting Hanover Street into Regent Street, (signal controlled)
  • An upgrade to the signalised junctions of Regent Street with Gt. Marlborough Street and Hanover Street.
  • Removal of 2 stage-staggered pedestrian crossing and replaced with 5 full length signal controlled crossings.
  • Maddox Street raised junction treatment.
  • Carriageway resurfacing with anti-skid surface to junction approaches.
  • Footway improvements including removal of clutter.
These works are being carried out with close liaison with adjacent developments on Hanover Square and Hanover Street.
