Ward: West End
Streets Affected: Denman Street, Glasshouse Street, Great Windmill Street, Shaftesbury Avenue, Sherwood Street
Project Type: Traffic, Safety & Parking
Project Overview
The City Council has made streetscape improvements to Denman Street which included the reversal of Denman Street so that traffic can move from Glasshouse Street and other roads west of Piccadilly Circus to Haymarket without putting any more pressure onto the Circus.
After comments from local stakeholders concerned about their roads being used as rat runs, it was decided to ban the left turn from Denman Street into Shaftesbury Avenue and direct traffic through to the Haymarket.
The scheme included:
- The reversal of traffic flow in Denman Street from westbound to eastbound;
- Opening Great Windmill Street south to traffic from Denman Street;
- The realignment of all kerb lines;
- Introduction of granite sett raised tables at the entrance to Great Windmill Street north of Shaftesbury Avenue and the exit from Denman Street;
- Reconfiguration of signalised pedestrian crossings;
- Revision of waiting and loading restrictions along Denman Street, Great Windmill Street south of Shaftesbury Avenue, Glasshouse Street and Sherwood Street; and
- Upgrade of the traffic signals and street lighting.
