Project Overview

Westminster City Council has commissioned FM Conway Ltd, the City Council’s service provider, to carry out maintenance and improvements works at Carnaby Street.

Carnaby Street is a major shopping avenue in London’s West End.  The works proposed aims to bring improvement to the shopping experience of pedestrians in the area. 

The works are planned to be undertaken from the 12th January 2015 to the 28th May 2015. Normal working hours will be Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 17:00 (13.00 on Saturdays if required). A quite period during lunchtime (with no heavy digging undertaken) between 12:30pm and  2:00pm is proposed

Whilst we will take steps to minimize the impact on residents and businesses, some of the works will be noisy.  Access to premises will not be affected by these works but the islands will not be available for any other activities during the works.

Implementation 12/01/2015-28/05/2015.
To permit safe execution of the works and reduce the impact on businesses, we propose to sequentially close sections of the road to vehicular traffic in six phases, as detailed below. Please note that pedestrian access will be maintained to all properties at all times:

Phase 1 - delivery access from Gt Marlborough Street will be restricted to the west access only, adjacent to the Liberty Store or via Kingly Street and Foubert's Place;

Phase 2 - delivery access from Gt Marlborough Street will be restricted to the east access only, adjacent to nos 34-38 Carnaby Street or via Kingly Street and Foubert's Place;

Phase 3 - Carnaby Street to be closed between Gt Marlborough Street and Foubert's Place. Traffic to be diverted via Kingly Street, Foubert's Place and Ganton Street. One-way working in Ganton Street (west) to be reversed and traffic to run two-way through Foubert's Place and the northern end of Carnaby Street. Deliveries for property nos 27-33 Carnaby Street will have to be wheeled in;

Phase 4 - Carnaby Street to be closed between Foubert's Place and Ganton Street. Traffic to be diverted via Kingly Street and Ganton Street. One-way working in Ganton Street (west) to be reversed and traffic to run two-way through Carnaby Street, between Gt Marlborough Street and Ganton Street. Deliveries for property nos 21-43 Carnaby Street will have to be wheeled in;

Phase 5 - Carnaby Street to be closed between Ganton Street and Broadwick Street. Traffic to run two-way through Carnaby Street, between Gt Marlborough Street and Ganton Street. Deliveries for property nos 11-16 and 44-50 Carnaby Street will have to be wheeled in;

Phase 6 - Carnaby Street to be closed between Broadwick Street and Beak Street. Traffic to run two-way through Carnaby Street, between Gt Marlborough Street and Ganton Street. Deliveries for property nos 1-9 and 50-57 Carnaby Street will have to be wheeled in

Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times. If your business has any utilities work planned for the early part of 2015, we ask that you aim to complete them by mid-January, in advance of our works.
