Marylebone lane public realm improvements

Marylebone lane public realm improvements

Ward: Marylebone

Streets Affected: Marylebone Lane

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Westminster City Council has been approached by Howard De Walden to develop the detailed design and implement public realm improvements to Marylebone Lane.

The public realm scheme was presented and received approval at PRAG on 25 September 2013 and PROG on 5 November 2013 and deemed acceptable in terms of design, materials are easily obtainable and maintainable.

Cabinet Member approval was obtained in 2014. All approvals are in place and the construction works are planned to start on 5 May 2015.

The scope of the proposed works will include the following:

  • Footway widening and realignment of both footways along Marylebone Lane from its junctions with Thayer Street and Wigmore Street;
  • New natural stone footway paving and granite kerbs;
  • New granite sett carriageway;
  • Improved public lighting and drainage.
  • Reduced street clutter and relocation of parking to surrounding streets.

Outline Programme

To permit safe execution of the works and reduce the impact on residents and businesses, we propose to sequentially close sections of the road to vehicular traffic over multiple work areas within two main phases (refer to drawing number UA006357-H-700-PH1-LP-01). Pedestrian access will be maintained to all properties at all times where safe and practicable.

The main works phases are:

Phase 1: Marylebone Lane between Thayer Street and Bentinck Street (Site Set up on 20 April, works start on 5 May 2015 to 28 October 2015);

Phase 2: Marylebone Lane between Bentinck Street and Wigmore Street (works start on 26 January 2016 to 23 September 2016).

Normal working hours will be Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:30. In some cases out of hours and weekend working will be required to minimise the impact on cull de sac road accesses. Please note that whilst we will take steps to minimise the impact of noise on businesses, some of the works will be noisy. Pedestrian access to businesses and residences will be maintained at all times.
