Project Overview

Westminster City Council has commissioned its service provider, FM Conway Limited, to undertake public realm improvement works on Portsmouth Street and Portugal Street, WC2A, London. The works will include the following: 

  • Installing pedestrian and cycle zone signs at both ends of Portsmouth Street;
  • Installing removable bollards to stop any vehicular access between Sheffield Street and Portugal Street, except cyclists.  
  • Converting Portsmouth Street in a shared surface paved in new Yorkstone setts;
  • Installing a new footway build-out onto the Portugal Street carriageway paved in new Yorkstone setts;
  • Installing a new ‘Loading Only’ bay in Portugal Street paved in new Yorkstone setts and to be flush with the adjacent footway;
  • Planting seven new trees in planters, and installing two new benches and three new cycle stands;
  • Improvements to the existing public lighting with new wall-mounted lights; and
  • Improvements to aid surface water drainage, including the relocation of five highway gullies and the installation of a new highway gully.

Outline Programme

Phase 1 (Portugal Street): starting on 27th September 2021 for four weeks to 21st October 2021, between 08:00 am - 17:00 pm;

Phase 2 (Portsmouth Street from Portugal Street to Sheffield Street): starting on 22nd October 2021 for eleven and half weeks to 25th January 2022, between 08:00 am - 17:00 pm, being the Christmas works stand down from 13th December 2021 to 4th January 2022; and

Phase 3 (Portsmouth Street from Sheffield Street to Sardinia Street/Lincoln's Inn Fields): starting on 26th January 2022 for eleven weeks to 5th April 2022, between 08:00 am - 17:00 pm.
