Ward: Lancaster Gate
Streets Affected: Bayswater Road, Lancaster Gate
Project Type: Traffic, Safety & Parking
Project Overview
The junction at Lancaster Gate & Bayswater Road has been prioritised for improvements due to a high number of Personal Injury Collisions (PICs), particularly involving cyclists. The site could undergo a series of improvements that will improve safety for all road users.
Key safety concerns that will be addressed by the proposed improvements include the high vulnerability of cyclists, poor lane discipline, confusing road markings, and risky turning movements (especially right turns into Lancaster Gate). The proposed improvements would also provide an opportunity to align with other cycle infrastructure upgrades in the nearby area.
The proposed changes to this junction include:
- Installation of raised tables in the carriageway and enlargement of the central island to slow vehicles down when turning.
- Improved road and cycle lane markings to help road users navigate lanes correctly and make turning easier.
- Kerb realignment to reduce vehicle speeds and make turning into and out of Lancaster Gate safer.
- Reduced crossing widths to improve pedestrian safety, by limiting the time vulnerable road users will be on the carriageway.
- Paving upgrades using high quality materials such as natural stone, granite setts, and use of textured surfaces to assist people with visual impairments.
- Drainage improvements through the installation of Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) rain gardens, which would also contribute to urban greening.
