Great Chapel Street - Pedestrianisation

Great Chapel Street - Pedestrianisation

Ward: West End

Streets Affected: Great Chapel Street

Project Type: Streetscape

Project Overview

Great Chapel Street was pedestrianised as part of measures introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, the street has operated successfully as a traffic-free space, providing a safer and more pleasant environment for people walking and cycling.

Westminster City Council is now looking to make the pedestrianisation more permanent through a comprehensive public realm improvement scheme. The project will transform the current arrangement into a high-quality, enduring public space that better reflects the character of Soho and supports the needs of residents, businesses and visitors.

The proposals include replacing existing asphalt surfaces with high-quality Yorkstone and granite paving, creating a more attractive and cohesive streetscape. The scheme will also introduce a level surface throughout the street, improving accessibility and making it easier for everyone to move through and enjoy the space.
